Biomass from South Tyrol

The production of window and construction timber creates more than just the final product. Sawdust, wood chips, and bark are valuable wood residues that can be used as biomass for energy and industrial applications.

At Sarner Holz, these by-products are consistently utilized. From every log, we create not only high-quality window timber, but also renewable energy from wood residues.

Our biomass products are used primarily by commercial customers:

  • biomass heating plants
  • pellet producers
  • wood-based materials industry
  • industrial energy plants
  • agricultural businesses

Depending on the material and quantity, delivery is made either in bulk or in larger lots.

The biomass products are generated directly during our ongoing production process. The available quantities may therefore vary depending on production.

If you are interested in regular deliveries or larger purchase quantities, we look forward to your enquiry.

Pellets

Sarner Holz pellets are wood pellets from South Tyrol, made from regional timber and by-products of wood processing. Short transport distances, strict quality control, and the use of electricity from hydro and solar power ensure a compelling overall balance. Ideal for anyone who wants to heat in a regional, reliable, and sustainable way.

Sawdust

Sawdust is generated during sawing and the further processing of timber. It is a fine and homogeneous wood raw material with a wide range of applications.
Typical applications:
• pellet production
• wood-based materials industry
• energy generation
• agricultural bedding

Thanks to continuous production, sawdust is generated regularly in larger quantities.

Wood Chips

Wood chips are produced by shredding wood residues and offcuts from production.
They are a proven fuel for:
• biomass heating plants
• industrial energy plants
• larger heating systems

Because they originate from timber processing, they are a regional and reliably available fuel.

Bark

Bark is generated during the debarking of logs and is also used as biomass.
Typical areas of use:
• biomass heating plants
• industrial energy generation
• horticulture

Bark is also part of our raw material cycle and is fully reused.

Heating plant

To cover the energy demand of our production, we use unsold biomass ourselves, thereby operating the heating system for the buildings as well as the drying chambers used in sawn timber production. In total, 2.2 MWh of electric energy are produced each year. Additionally, the produced heat supplies 20+ drying chambers and the entire heating system of our production halls.

Virtual Tour: Our Heating Plant

In our heating plant, we generate 2.2 MWh of electrical energy and over 19 MWh of thermal energy.

The use of renewable resources is thus a central component of our sustainable energy strategy.

Where does the wood come from?

The wood comes mainly from regional forestry and is processed at our production site in South Tyrol. All logs come from the Alps, ensuring local supply chains.

Is the biomass certified?

Our biomass products are by-products of wood processing and, unlike the pellets, are not certified by AIEL. However, delivery with PEFC certification is possible.

Which wood species are processed?

The biomass products consist of approximately 100% local softwood species such as spruce and larch, with small amounts of Swiss stone pine.

In what quantities is biomass available?

The quantities depend on our ongoing production and may vary. When in doubt, just ask!
